Pupil Leadership

Pupil Leadership at St Julian's Church School

How do children develop agency, responsibility and a sense that they can make a difference?

Pupil Leadership

At St Julian’s, we believe that children should not simply learn about responsibility, they should have opportunities to experience it. Pupil leadership is an important part of our personal development offer. We want children to understand that their ideas, choices and actions matter and that, whatever their age, they can make a positive contribution to their school and wider community.

Leadership at St Julian’s isn’t about being the loudest voice or being “in charge”. It is about listening, taking responsibility, working with others and having the courage to make a difference.

This reflects our vision:

AIM HIGH

I have ideas. I can make a difference.

BELIEVE

I have strengths and gifts that I can use for others.

SUCCEED

I can contribute, lead and help others to flourish.

Our Christian vision reminds us that leadership is ultimately about how we use what we have been given to serve others. We want our children to leave St Julian’s understanding that leadership is not about status. It is about character, courage, compassion and contribution.

Every Child Can Contribute

We want every child to have the opportunity to discover their own strengths, develop their leadership skills and make a positive contribution to school life. Leadership is a journey that develops as children grow, with opportunities evolving to reflect their age, interests, strengths and the needs of our school community.

Younger children begin by learning to take responsibility for themselves, their classroom and the people around them. As they progress through school, they learn to work with and support others, take on greater responsibility and contribute to the wider school community. By the time they reach Year 6, we want children to be confident to lead, make decisions, inspire others and leave a positive legacy within our school.

Children can contribute in many different ways, including:

  • School Leadership – taking responsibility for aspects of school life and helping to make our school an even better place.
  • Learning Leadership – supporting others with learning, reading, books and the wider life of the classroom.
  • Environmental Leadership – helping us care for our school environment and encouraging sustainable choices.
  • Community Leadership – contributing to charitable activities, community events and opportunities to serve others.
  • Creative and Sporting Leadership – representing the school, performing, competing, organising and encouraging others.
  • Pupil Voice – sharing ideas, opinions and experiences and helping to shape aspects of school life.

Our pupil leadership teams are intentionally flexible and change from year to year. This enables us to respond to the strengths and interests of each group of children, as well as the priorities and needs of our school community, ensuring that leadership opportunities remain meaningful and relevant.

Alongside these changing opportunities, our Year 6 House Captains are a consistent part of school life. They have the opportunity to represent their House, support others and develop their confidence and leadership skills.

Leadership at St Julian’s is not about being the loudest voice or being ‘in charge’. It is about listening, taking responsibility, working with others and having the courage to make a difference. We want every child to understand that their ideas, choices and actions matter, and that they have something valuable to contribute.
