Our Building & History
St Julian’s Church School is situated in the attractive and friendly village of Wellow, just south of Bath.
The School’s Building
The main school building, dating back to 1843, is home to the school hall, one classroom, the library and our administrative offices. Three additional classrooms, each with their own facilities, are situated nearby. The school site also includes a spacious playground, a small field known as The Paddock, an adventure play area and a school garden.
In September 2018, our Early Years outdoor provision was significantly enhanced with the addition of a purpose-built canopy. This extension enables children in both Oak and Chestnut classes to enjoy free-flow access between the classroom and outdoor environment, supporting rich, hands-on learning experiences throughout the day.
We are very lucky to be located in the beautiful village of Wellow, surrounded by rolling countryside, open spaces and woodland. Our unique setting provides wonderful opportunities for outdoor learning and we make the most of this through Forest School sessions and other outdoor experiences that enrich the curriculum and bring learning to life for our children.
The School’s History
St Julian’s Church School was established to provide education for children from Wellow and the surrounding rural communities. The school takes its name from the neighbouring Church of St Julian, one of Somerset’s oldest parish churches. The church has origins dating from before the 12th century, with much of the present building dating from 1372.
Our school logo is inspired by a statue of St Julian, who is depicted holding an oar. The statue can be seen in a niche above the church porch and serves as a lasting symbol of our close connection with the parish church and the local community.
In 2010, St Julian’s Church School joined with Camerton Church School as part of the Church Valley Schools Federation, sharing leadership and governance while remaining separate schools. In 2012, Shoscombe Church School joined the federation. This partnership further strengthened collaboration and helped sustain high-quality education across three small village schools.
Since December 2018, St Julian’s Church School has been part of the Midsomer Norton Schools Partnership Trust. As a member of the Trust, we work collaboratively with other schools, benefitting from shared expertise across a wide range of areas, including school improvement, finance, health and safety, as well as many other aspects of school leadership and management.
