Healthy Eating at St Julian's Church School

Healthy Eating

Healthy eating plays an important role in helping children grow, learn and thrive. A balanced diet gives children the energy and nutrients they need to stay active, concentrate in class and support their overall wellbeing. At school, we encourage children to make healthy choices and develop positive eating habits that can benefit them throughout their lives.

Break Time Snack

All children are able to have a snack at morning break time.

In Reception, Year 1 and Year 2, the children receive a free piece of fruit or vegetable through the National School Fruit and Vegetable Scheme (SFVS). The snack option changes seasonally, but includes apples, bananas and carrots most weeks.

Parents are able to provide a snack for their children in KS2 or for any younger children who do not want the school fruit/vegetable. We request that these snacks are either fruit or vegetable based. We understand some children may be hungrier or have particular dietary needs, so may require more than a piece of fruit/vegetable. Please aim to keep these snacks as healthy and balanced as possible.

We request that break time snacks are NOT highly processed foods, such as crisps, chocolate and biscuits.

Nut Free School

Although we recognise that this cannot be guaranteed, St Julian’s Church School is a Nut Free School. The school aims to protect children who have allergies to nuts yet also help them, as they grow up, to take responsibility as to what foods they can eat and to be aware of where they may be put at risk.

We do not allow nuts or nut products in school, including break time snacks and lunch boxes.

This means that the following items should not be brought into school:

  • Packets of nuts
  • Peanut butter or Nutella
  • Fruit and cereal bars that contain nuts
  • Chocolate bars or sweets that contain nuts
  • Cakes that contain nuts
  • Any home cooked meals for packed lunches that include nuts
  • Anything which includes nuts

While we encourage parents to avoid foods that state they ‘may contain traces of nuts’, we recognise that often this is very hard to avoid when packing a lunch box, therefore these items may be brought to school.
